In order to enjoy your trip to Gobi to the fullest, you should join the tour. Because the distance between Ulanbaator (UB) and the Gobi is so long, the road is very bumpy and you can get lost easily without the guide. Khongor Expedition arranged my tour. And I could have a precious experience in the huge desert. This is my itinerary for 6 day touring through Gobi Desert. (May, 2017)
LET’S GO TO GOBI DESERT
At 9:00 we leave for the Mongolian countryside from the capital city, Ulan Bator (UB). Of course our destination is Gobi Desert, but the desert is a great distance off. Therefore we must stay in the southern suburbs on the first day. The first stop is Baga Gaziin Chuluu. Here is famous as the Small Rock Formation. The highest Tahilgat Mountain is 1758 meters high. We can visit the ruins of a stone temple, the cave where monks lived and meditated since the seventieth century. In addition, there is a spring water which comes from under source is good for eye illness.
WIDE HORIZONS SPREAD IN FRONT OF US
Driving toward Bayazang, a forest and the area of red cliffs. Before reaching our destination, we’ll stop by religious ruins. This complex consisted of various administrative buildings and pagodas. Unfortunately these complexes were destroyed completely during anti-religious purges. This place is situated about 18 km south of the town of Saikhan Ovoo. We stay overnight near Bayazang. We’ll meet the wide horizons and the star-filled sky.
DISCOVER THE FOSSIL AND MEET THE HUGE DUNE
In the morning we visit Flaming Cliff. This place was formed from the erosion of the sand and rocks over many thousands of years. Here is a world famous site because lots of fossil have been found; the first discovery of dinosaur eggs as well as complete dinosaur skeletons. After visiting a place noted for its superb views, we head for Khongor Sand Dunes. These extend along the northern side of Sevrei and Zoolun moutain ranges. At the foot of these dunes, we have an interesting opportunity in order to ride on a camel.
CHALLENGE TO HIGH DUNES AND FROZEN VALLEY
Before breakfast we climb one of the dunes. It’s tough task, and only energetic travelers can get to the summit. The scenery is picturesque beyond description. Remember, this is a severer trial than you expect.
After breakfast, we drive to Yolyn Am valley. This valley begins from Zuun Saikhan Mountain, a branch of the Gurvan Saikhan mountain system. It stretches over 10 kilometer. The name “Yolyn Am” is often translated to Valley of the Vultures or Valley of the Eagles. If you have a luck, you can witness big eagles here. In addition we can see the ice field reaches several meters thick by the end of winter. There are some areas of perpetual snow.
LAST NIGHT IN GOBI DESERT
Our journey is nearing its end. We leave for Dundgobi province. On the way, we can see lots of animals; running gazelles, grassing camels. Being lucky, we can watch the sun set into the huge desert. We enjoy last supper, a traditional and popular Mongolian cuisine “Khorhoc” in Nomadic family.
ANCIENT SEA AND THE DESERT AND GO BACK TO UB
We must come to an end at one time or other. Before going back to UB. We visit White Stupa (Tsagaan Suvraga). More than 100 thousand years ago, this place was in the sea. After dried up the sea, this area became a valley with many escarpments. The wind and rain have created this amazing structure over thousands of years. These rocky formations are about 60 metres (196,85 feet) high and 400 metres (1312,34 feet) long. Now is the time we must leave this beautiful place. We arrive at UB on almost 18:30.
