2007年スリランカを訪れた。当時スリランカは民族を起因とした内戦状態でシンハラ（マジョリティ）とタミル（マイノリティ）の間で激戦が続いていた。その戦いは26年(1983-2009)も続き、少なくとも10万人の国民が犠牲になったと言われている。この内戦は今でも彼らの歴史に影を落としている。ただこのような状況下においてもスリランカはなお美しかった。そしてスリランカの人々も優しく、おもてなしの心で私を迎えてくれた。
2009年内戦は終結を迎えることができた。そしてついに「スリランカ」というひとつの国家となることができたといわれている。現在多くの観光客がこの美しい国を訪れ、忘れることのできない素敵な経験を得ている。私ももう一度この土地を訪れてみたいと思っている。特に当時テロが発生したり、激戦地ということで近づくことさえ許されなかった北部地域を重点的に。

In 2007, I visited Sri Lanka while the country’s civil war was still ongoing. The ethnic conflict between the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil minority lasted for 26 years (1983–2009), and up to 100,000 people were killed. This war continues to cast a dark shadow over this otherwise friendly nation.
Despite the instability at the time, Sri Lanka was a beautiful country, and the people were incredibly kind and full of hospitality.
The civil war ended in 2009, and it is said that Sri Lanka became a united nation. Today, many tourists visit the country and have unforgettable experiences. I would like to visit again, especially to the northern region, which I couldn’t go to back then due to the intense fighting.
