イゲラはボリビアにあるとても小さな村である。サンタ・クルス県バジェグランデ（こちらもまたチェ所縁の地）から60キロの距離になる。ここまで到達するのは一苦労だった。細くボコボコした山道は永遠に続くように思えたし、タクシーは３時間ずっとガタガタと音を立てて進んで行った。
苦労してこの牧歌的な場所に来たには理由がある。この平和な風景からは全く想像できないが、こここそがチェ・ゲバラ終焉の地なのである。その日はいつもの静かでのどかな村とは全く違っていた。数発の銃声が山の渓谷の静けさをつんざいた。高い志を持った情熱的な革命家たち一人ずつ命を落として行った。そしてボリビア兵はチェの心臓を撃ち抜いたのだった。
1967年10月9日、彼は革命家としての39年の人生に幕を閉じた。道半ばにして途絶えた彼の旅路を思うと、どれだけ彼は落胆したことだろうと思う。それと同時に、彼の人生は満足のいくものではなかったかとも思うのである。なぜなら彼の意思はそこで息絶えることなく、次世代へと脈々と受け継がれているからである。
La Higuera is a very small village in Bolivia, located 60 km from Vallegrande. It was not easy to get here. The bumpy and narrow mountain roads seemed to go on forever, and the taxi rattled for three hours.
There was a clear reason why I came to this idyllic place. Most people may not be able to imagine it, but this is exactly where Che Guevara met his end. It wasn’t as peaceful and quiet as one might expect. Some gunshots shattered the tranquility of the mountain valley. Ardent revolutionaries, full of hope, lost their lives one by one. Then, finally, a Bolivian soldier shot Che through the heart.
On October 9, 1967, he ended his 39 years as a revolutionary. I think he must have felt deeply disappointed, as he died in the midst of his journey. But at the same time, I believe his life might have been satisfying, because his ideas were passed down to the next generation.
