フェルナンド・ボテロの作品を見ていると自然と笑みがこぼれてしまう。それは、彼が描く絵がどことなく田舎くさくかわいらしいからからか、それともその絵のアンバランスさから来るものか。彼の作品はいつでも何かを訴えかけてくる。時にはシリアスに、時には社会を風刺するかのように。社会の情勢やコロンビア政治を少しでも知っていると、その登場人物との対話が始まり、面白みは倍増する。だから彼の作品に何度でも会いに行きたくなる。
ボテロははもはやラテンアメリカだけの芸術家ではく、世界の遺産である。彼の作品は異彩を放ち、ボテリスモは世界中から高評価を得ている。それゆえ作品は世界中で引っ張りだこで、予想外のところで出会うこともある。旅先で広場の像にちょっと目を配ってみてほしい。もしかしたらそれはボテロの作品かもしれないからだ。

Whenever I see Botero’s artworks, a sudden smile flashes across my face. Maybe it’s because the figures look unpolished or slightly unbalanced. His artworks often speak to me—sometimes coolly, sometimes seriously, and sometimes ironically. The more I learn about the political and social situation in Colombia, the more I appreciate his masterpieces. That’s why I want to see them again and again.
Fernando Botero is no longer just a Latin American artist. His artworks shine on the global stage, and Boterismo is celebrated worldwide. Many people love his work. As a result, you can find his masterpieces not only in Colombia but all around the world. Take a look around—you might be closer to his art than you think.
